Sherif H. Kamel

Sherif H Kamel is founding dean of the School of Business at The American University in Cairo (September 2009-present) and professor of management information systems. Kamel led a major repositioning of the school by adopting a distinctive 3-tier thematic approach that includes entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership. The school is AACSB accredited and is highly recognized in the Middle East and Africa. Since 1997, the school (formerly school of Business, Economics and Communication) offers one of the most comprehensive and diversified executive educative programs in the region accredited by ACCET with over 8,000 executives and middle managers trained annually. The undergraduate program ranks among the top 1% in the region and the MBA program ranked top by Forbes ME in 2012. Kamel has a long and varied experience as an academic leader investing in human capital, building and managing executive development institutions addressing management, entrepreneurial, and leadership issues. He was associate dean for executive education (2008-2009) where he led the establishment of the school’s International Executive Education Institute. Between 2002 and 2008, he was director of the school’s primary professional development department, the Management Center, turning it into a multi-million US dollars revenue portfolio and during the period 2002-2006, he was director of the Institute of Management Development. Before joining AUC, he was director of the Regional IT Institute (1992-2001) and for the period 1987-1992, he helped establish and manage the training department of the Cabinet of Egypt Information and Decision Support Centre. Kamel is an advocate of diversity, empowerment, and inclusion. Kamel holds a PhD in Information Systems from London School of Economics and Political Science (1994), an MBA (1990) and a BA in Business Administration (1987) from The American University in Cairo. Currently, he is pursuing an MA in Islamic Art and Architecture. His research and teaching interests include management of information technology, information technology transfer to developing nations, electronic business and decision support systems, his work is broadly published in IS and management journals. He is the editor of E-Strategies for Technological Diffusion and Adoption: National ICT Approaches for Socioeconomic Development (2010), Electronic Business in Developing Countries: Challenges and Opportunities (2005) and Managing Globally with Information Technology (2003). He serves on the editorial and advisory board of a number of IS journals and is the associate editor of the Journal of Cases on Information Technology and the Journal of IT for Development. Kamel is an Eisenhower Fellow (2005) and was member of the Eisenhower Fellowships Alumni Advisory Council (2008-2011). He is a member of the World Bank Knowledge Advisory Commission (2012-present). He is board member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt (2012-present), the US-Egypt Business Council (2011-present), the Association of African Business Schools (2011-present) and Junior Achievement-Injaz Egypt (2010-present). He is a member of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs and the Rotary Organization. He is a founding member of the Internet Society of Egypt and Egypt Vision 2030 Foundation. He is a member of the Academy of Management and the Association of Information Systems. He was VP for communications and member of the Executive Council of the Information Resources Management Association (2002-2007), member of the board of trustees of the Information Technology Institute (2005-2011) and the Sadat Academy for Management Sciences (2007-2011). Kamel was Chairman of the Chevening Association in Egypt (2004-2009). He consults to government organizations and corporations addressing executive development, management and IT strategy. He was a guest lecturer and taught degree and non-degree programs for Middlesex University, Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University), Maastricht School of Management, Claremont Graduate University, the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and McMaster University. He was invited as panelist/speaker in a variety of IS, management, development and leadership conferences and expert meetings including Asia-Middle East Dialogue, Microsoft Leaders Forum Arabia, AACSB International, EFMD, ITU, AMCIS, UNECA, UNIDO, UNDP, IGF, WSIS, British Council, League of Arab States and the World Bank. He served as judge in different IT and business plan competitions including the Students in Free Enterprise-SIFE Egypt (2010); Junior Achievement-Injaz Egypt (2010); Stockholm challenge (2008); Mtandao Africa (2004 and 2007); and the ThinkQuest challenge (1999 and 2001). Kamel won a number of organizational leadership awards for serving the IT community in 1999 (IRMA, USA), 2000 (BITWorld, Mexico), 2009 and 2010 (IBIMA, Egypt) and 2011 (The Cabinet of Egypt Information and Decision Support Center, Egypt). He also won the American University in Cairo School of Business, Economics and Communication Excellence in Research Award in 2005. His interests include reading, history, music, and sports.
