Paula Urze
Paula Urze
holds a Ph.D. in Economic and Organizational Sociology (School of Economics and Management, ISEG/UL). Since April 2018 she is head of the Department of Applied Social Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon (FCT NOVA), and professor in the same department and researcher at the Interuniversity Centre for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT). Her main research areas are: Innovation, Science and Technology, R&D networks and knowledge transfer in multinational corporations (FDI). She is author and co-author of various national and international publications – scientific journals, book editions, and conference proceedings. She has been leading national research projects developed with research institutions and industry (e.g. R&D.COM - Local R&D Competencies in Global Value Chains, (FCT/MCTES), 2005- 2009; e.g. CoRe – Competencies to value creation in R&D networks, IPL, BIT (BRISA, Inovação e Tecnologia), 2012-2014 and has participated in international and national projects and networks - H2020 e.g. InsSciDE – Inventing a shared Science Diplomacy for Europe (2018-2021); e.g. Antropolands - Engineering the Anthropocene: The role of colonial Science, Technology and Medicine on changing of the African landscape, FCT/MCTES, 2016-2019. She has served in scientific societies in the field of economic sociology, sociology of innovation and organizations – e.g., coordinator of the thematic session of Work, Professions and Organizations of the Portuguese Association of Sociology (2014 -). She has systematically participated in reference international conferences on sociology of science and technology and innovation - European Sociological Association (ESA), International Sociological Association (ISA) and European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST). She belongs to the team that was distinguished by the Santander Totta / NOVA University of Lisbon 2011 Scientific Merit Award, dedicated to the area of Social and Human Sciences, with the project entitled Work in Times of Crisis: Factors and Strategies for Insertion. Higher Education Graduates. The H2020 HERACLES project (2016-2019), in which she was involved in the topic of socio-economics risk analysis, was selected as the European Commission Success Story, awarding the high scientific quality of the results and their extensive interdisciplinary work. She is a board member of several scientific societies, and currently serves as a board member to the Portuguese Association of Political Economy (2016 -) and she is the President of the Portuguese Association of Professionals in Industrial Sociology, Sociology of Organizations and Work (2014 -). Currently, she is co-supervising 4 PhD on the subject of science and technology studies and methodological issues and she has been involved in organization and scientific committees of international conferences on her field of work e.g. the ISSOW entitled Work, (In)equalities and Social Relations in the Digital Economy (March, 2020) and also in the organization of panels in international conferences e.g. RC23 Sociology of Science and Technology: Governance in Science and Technology: Research, Innovation and Knowledge, 3rd ISA Forum of Sociology, 2016; Innovation, Science, Technology and the Transformation of Work, Conference Democracy and Participation in the 21st Century, ISA, RC10 – Participation, Organisational Democracy & Self- Management, 2017.
