Mitsu Narui

Mitsu Narui (she/her) identifies as a first-generation, Japanese American, Jewish woman. Growing up and attending school in the Midwest meant that her identity as an Asian American was often masked within the Model Minority Myth. While in graduate school to get a master’s in college student personnel, Mitsu took a multicultural education course, which ultimately became her transformational experience and helped her to see how her Asian identity shaped her understanding of these complex issues. After taking this course, she then took a course on social justice education. Using those principles, for the past twenty years, Mitsu has continuously sought ways in which to incorporate this knowledge and her skills in social justice education either in direct positions (e.g., working in a multicultural center) or peripherally (e.g., teaching this course while working in an unrelated administrative position).
