Michelle Priester

Dr. Michelle Priester holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counseling, a MS in Administration and Services and a BA in Psychology. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. Dr. Priester currently works at South Carolina State University as a Professor in Rehabilitation Counseling. She is also the past Chair of the Department of Human Services and Coordinator of the Rehabilitation Counseling program. During her tenure at SCSU, she has served as Project Director on 5 federally funded grants from the Department of Education and SAMHSA totaling $5,250,000. Four of the funded grants were specifically to increase the shortage of qualified personnel in rehabilitation counseling. She has written several peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters and presented at multiple conferences. Dr. Priester’s primary areas of research includes mental health and addictions, grief counseling, intellectual disabilities, ethics and advocating for individuals with disabilities. Dr. Priester has also been awarded the Outstanding Research and Grant award by the College of Graduate and Professional Studies at South Carolina State University. Dr. Priester was previously employed at the Delta Center in Cairo, IL as an Outpatient Director. In this position she was responsible for the overall operations of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse treatment programs. While in this position she developed a Level II Outpatient Treatment program, managed a staff of 4 mental health counselors and 6 certified addiction counselors. Prior to that she worked as a Certified Addictions Counselor for Southern Illinois Regional Social Services serving both adult and adolescent populations with co-occurring disorders. She also worked as an Addictions Counselor at the Good Samaritan House where she provided individual and group counseling, supervised Case Managers, and facilitated in-service trainings.
