Michael Rabbidge

Michael Rabbidge is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the University of Waikato, with over two decades of international experience in language teacher education. His work focuses on translanguaging, multilingualism, language ideology, and the formation of teacher and learner identities. Before relocating to New Zealand, Michael taught across Asia, working with educators in both public and private sectors. His research critically explores how sociopolitical forces shape classroom language practices, and how inclusive pedagogies can empower learners by validating their full linguistic repertoires. Michael advocates for reflexive, context-sensitive teaching approaches and is particularly interested in how multilingual classroom practices promote authenticity and autonomy. He has published on the politics of English language teaching, reflexive methodologies, and translanguaging in EFL contexts. At Waikato, he contributes to TESOL teacher development, supervises research in language education, and supports curriculum innovation grounded in linguistic justice and equity.
