Matthew Pears

Matthew Pears holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and advanced degrees including a Master of Science by Research (MRes) and a PhD in Psychology. His extensive research in healthcare pedagogy, innovative technologies, and applied cognition focuses on enhancing learning and healthcare delivery through Large Language Models, Virtual Reality, and human factors techniques. Currently, Dr. Pears is a member of the Health E-learning and Media (HELM) team at the University of Nottingham, where he researches digital educational tools. His research efforts include developing and implementing cutting-edge educational tools, notably using virtual reality for surgical training, and exploring the use of AI through Large Language Models. Dr. Pears has authored numerous publications in journals such as the Journal of Applied Psychology and the Journal of Surgical Education and has presented at significant conferences. His research often bridges psychology, technology, and healthcare education, demonstrating practical applications of innovative technologies in medical settings. In addition to his academic publications, Dr. Pears has contributed to international projects like ERASMUS+ CoViRR and CEPEH, which focus on VR and AI in healthcare education. These projects aim to improve healthcare pedagogy through policy analysis and best practice guidelines. Dr. Pears's technical skills include developing VR applications, using EEG technology, data analysis and visualization with SPSS, R Studio, and Python, and manages large datasets effectively. His experience extends to developing small-scale web applications and utilizing LLM APIs in educational resources. He has been involved in other funded projects and has been awarded funds including the ESCR Impact Accelerator Fund, Leeds Hospital Charity Fund, and Santander Mobility Fund. Dr. Pears actively contributes to the academic community as a reviewer, conference organizer, and disseminating outputs at events to share his knowledge and uphold research standards.
