Laura Elizabeth Petillo

Laura Petillo , Ed.D. is the Music Programs Manager for the Count Basie Center Conservatory of Music. In these roles, she oversees innovative music education programs that bridge performance, education, and community engagement. Dr. Petillo earned her undergraduate degree in music from Mason Gross (Rutgers University), and both her master’s in early childhood education and her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Monmouth University. Although Dr. Petillo takes on a limited number of private students, she serves as the strings coach for the Count Basie Center Youth Conservatory Orchestra and facilitates the Count Basie Center Gospel Choir. Her role also includes creating masterclasses and music experiences for local Red Bank and Conservatory students in collaboration with the New Jersey Symphony. A sought-after speaker, she has presented her research at the New Jersey Music Educators Association in 2022 and at the Above and Beyond Conference in 2024, where she contributed a topic on music and social–emotional learning. In 2020, she was honored with Monmouth University’s Excellence in Early Childhood Education Award. In the same award ceremony, Dr. Petillo also won the Proposed Scholarly Research Award for her dissertation, “Equity in Kindergarten Readiness: The Effects of Direct Instruction Literacy Curriculum in Gentrified Urban Preschools.” Currently, Dr. Petillo continues to record, teach, and perform on violin and voice, as well write book chapters with her colleagues at Monmouth University’s Graduate School of Education.
