Jessica Benton
Jessica F. Benton
, Ph.D., has been in education for over 20 years. She earned a Masters of Education in Special Education from North Carolina State University, and received her PhD in Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her areas of expertise are special education, community schools, collaboration and partnership, activist scholarship, and teacher education. Prior to teaching in higher education she taught elementary special education for 12 years in the Wake County Public School System where she politically organized around public school issues alongside educators and families. She is passionate about empowering teachers, students, and their families to make change in their local schools. She believes in public education and advocates for more inclusive educational settings for all students. Her research has focused on community school models, university assisted community schools, teacher retention, and locally grown teacher candidate programs. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Education at SUNY Plattsburgh.
