Hajah Zurinah binti Haji Ya’akub
is a lecturer in Malay Language and Communication skills at Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s Language Centre, with 17 years of experience in teaching and curriculum development. She works closely with both local and international students, helping them navigate the structure and soul of the Malay language through its grammar, usage, and cultural relevance. She holds a Master’s in Language and Applied Linguistics from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, and a PhD in Linguistics from Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Her doctoral research focused on spelling errors in university student writing — a topic that intersects language learning, cognitive processing, and educational equity. Passionate about multilingualism and comparative linguistics, she’s especially intrigued by the grammatical systems of Thai and Vietnamese. Her work reflects a commitment to making language education inclusive, research-driven, and globally connected — values that resonate with a generation that thrives on diversity, authenticity, and meaningful communication.
