David Watson

David Watson is the Programme Leader for the MA Web Design & Content Planning programme. His academic and professional background spans multiple disciplines, including Physical Geography, Remote Sensing, Landscape Architecture, and Computer-Aided Design. A Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute, he spent a decade working as a landscape architect for some of the largest practices in the UK, where he pioneered the adoption of computer-aided design and managed the industry’s transition from traditional drawing boards to digital platforms. David joined the University of Greenwich in 1995 as a Senior Lecturer, initially teaching on the BA and MA Landscape Architecture programmes. He played a key role in developing a new digital curriculum for both, reflecting his expertise in integrating technology into design education. Over time, he expanded his teaching portfolio to include Garden Design, Graphic & Digital Design, and 3D Digital Design at the undergraduate level. In 2003, David launched the UK’s first master's programme in web design, the MA Web Design & Content Planning, which he designed and developed in collaboration with his colleague, Tom Turner. This innovative programme, which remains active and successful, set a benchmark for web-focused education in the UK. Before transitioning to full-time academia in 2012, David also ran a consultancy specializing in Visual Impact Assessment (VIA). His work included producing high-accuracy photomontages and conducting Zone of Theoretical Visibility (ZTV) analyses to support landscape planning projects. David’s extensive experience across both professional practice and academia informs his current teaching and leadership roles, ensuring that his work remains at the forefront of web design education and digital innovation.
