Daniel Christopher Blackshields

Daniel Christopher Blackshields is a college lecturer in the Department of Economics. He has also taught for CIRTL. He holds an MA in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education for his thesis on the integration of the Teaching for Understanding Framework (TfU) with the Sherlock Holmes narratives as a pedagogical tool to develop problem-solving, metacognitive, and reflective competencies in Economics and business students. This pedagogical research was published in Innovative Business School Teaching (Routledge, 2013). He has presented and published on TfU, Integrative Learning, Reflective Practice and Creativity. He was the lead editor for Integrative Learning: International Research and Practice (Routledge, 2015). In 2009, he was nominated for a NAIRTL National Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2012, he won both the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and President’s Award for Research on Innovative Forms of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. In 2012, he was appointed as a CIRTL Teaching Fellow for Reflective Practice. In 2014, he was nominated for a UCC Staff Recognition Award: Enhancing the Student Experience. In 2015, he was appointed to the NAIRTL Expert Panel. In 2015, he was (with Dr. Ella Kavanagh) nominated by UCC for a NAIRTL National Teaching Experts: learning Impact Award. In 2017, he (with Ella Kavanagh, Mary McNulty, and Aileen Waterman) won the Association of Higher Education Careers Services Excellence in Employability Award for the Transition to Professional Life module suite. In 2019, he (with Mary McNulty and Ella Kavanagh) were shortlisted for the Irish Education Awards – Best Career Impact Strategy. In 2020, he was awarded the title UCC Hero. He was the University Examinations Appeals Officer from 2016-2020, and now sits on the University Examination Appeals Committee. He sits on the University’s Academic Development and Standards Committee, and chair CUBS’ Assurance of Learning Committee. In 2021, he was appointed to the University Academic Integrity Advisory Taskforce and in 2022 to the Access Employability Steering Group. In 2023, he was appointed as the University Student Ombudsman.
