Cameron Lacy Ortega
Dr.
Cameron Ortega
is an Assistant Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Services and Counseling. She holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counseling (2022) and a Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling (2009) from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, as well as a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts (2006) from the University of Texas Pan American. With over 15 years of experience in mental health and substance use treatment, Dr. Ortega has worked with diverse populations in various settings, including inpatient, outpatient, and private practice. She currently serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for the Texas Rehabilitation Association and is a Board Director for the Palmer Drug Abuse Program in McAllen. Dr. Ortega’s research focuses on the intersection of substance use, disability, and psychiatric disorders, with a strong commitment to social justice, particularly within the LGBTQIA+ community. She utilizes a harm reduction framework to explore ways to mitigate risks and improve the quality of life for individuals experiencing substance use disorders. Her work examines the impact of systemic inequities on access to care and advocates for inclusive, person-centered approaches that prioritize safety, dignity, and empowerment. Through her research and advocacy, Dr. Ortega seeks to bridge gaps in service delivery and promote evidence-based strategies that support long-term recovery and well-being.
