Anthony Harris

Anthony J. Harris , a native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, earned his bachelor’s degree (1974) in Spanish and master’s degree (1976) in Counseling from the University of Southern Mississippi. He completed his doctorate in 1982 at Texas A&M University-Commerce (now East Texas A&M University). As an active participant in Hattiesburg’s local Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Harris has dedicated much of his life to social justice advocacy. He has authored numerous scholarly articles and 14 books, drawing on life lessons from his commitment to social justice, education, and human rights. Dr. Harris was featured in the PBS documentary Freedom Summer and was a member of Group Nine of the W.K. Kellogg National Fellowship Program, which afforded him the opportunity to travel to 17 countries over three years. His dedication to public education includes serving 15 years on the Commerce, Texas school board and establishing mentoring programs for African American boys in several Texas school districts. He also conducts workshops and delivers keynote addresses on topics such as the Civil Rights Movement, the educational success of young Black males, and leadership. Currently, Dr. Harris serves as Professor and Interim Dean of the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education at Prairie View A&M University. He has previously held administrative and faculty positions at Sam Houston State University, East Texas A&M University, Mercer University, and the University of Southern Mississippi.
